EcoFriendly Home Cleaners with a dash of Peppermint!

isn't it amazing what a little baking soda, vinegar and peppermint oil can do?

Homemade Peppermint Shower Scrub
1 cup baking soda
1/4 tsp peppermint essential oil

■Mix the ingredients then store in a glass mason jar.
■To use: Sprinkle on a wet sponge and scrub bath and shower walls. Rinse off with water.

All-Purpose Cleaner

1 cup distilled water
1/2 cup household vinegar
1/2 tsp liquid castille soap
1/4 tsp Peppermint essential oil

■Mix ingredients in a spray bottle and shake before use.
■To use: Spray on tiles and walls, wipe clean with a damp sponge.

Homemade Floor Cleaner

1 gallon hot water
2 TBS liquid castille soap
1/4 tsp Peppermint essential oil

■Mix ingredients in a large bucket.
■To use: Mop floor.

Bathroom Mold Remover

1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup salt
1/2 tsp peppermint essential oil

■Mix ingredients in a spray bottle, shake well before use.
■To use: Spray mold then leave sit for a few minutes before wiping off mold.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner & Freshener

1 cup baking soda
1 cup vinegar

■To use: First drizzle baking soda into the toilet. Top with vinegar. Allow to fizz for 10 minutes then use a toilet brush to scrub toilet clean. After cleaning the toilet, wipe underneath the seat and around the rim with a damp cloth that has a few drops of peppermint essential oil.

CupaCake, When just Hot Chocolate won't do!

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons cake flour(that’s plain flour, not self-rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips(optional)
a small splash of vanilla
1 coffee mug

Directions:
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well
Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

I haven't tried it, but just in case there is a chocolate cake emergency......

Going Hunting for Mama's Blackberry Cobbler

Growing up on a farm on the Tennessee/Kentucky line proved to be quite the adventurous setting. From fishing with a cane-pole, settin' tobacco, hunting for newborn kittens and "dressing" chickens, there came a wealth of diverse culture, tales, myths and recipes.

One of my favorites, the mouth watering, tooth-pickin', stain fightin' fresh Blackberry Cobbler. We would head to the woods over by the railroad tracks in our secret place, knowing the blackberry bushes were wild and roaming over the foliage. Rambling amongst the briers, thistle and chiggers; hiding so you couldn't see them. The luscious warm clusters, sparkling from the midday sun, giving away their location to only the astute of hunters and huntresses!

Armed for battle with long sleeves, pants, gloves, hats and as much skin covered as possible, we plunged into the thickets with buckets in tow. There they were, blackish, bluish, purple, plump, sweet, tart and tasty. Their wild taste isn't even comparable to those sold at the store. Those faux, tame clusters, plunked into clear boxes and labeled with ingredients, calories and serving size.

Now for Mama's Recipe. So easy, you'll be searching for the railroad tracks and those wild devils to make one for yourself.

Ingredients
4 cups fresh blackberries, WILD and WASHED!.....coat with 1 1/2 cups sugar, let set to cause the juices to seep from the berries while you make the pastry.

mix together: (notice it's 1 of everything but milk)
1 large egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 stick butter, melted (can use oil instead)
1/2 to 2/3 cup milk, not too runny

Preheat oven to 375°. Stir sugared blackberries, pour into a lightly greased 8-inch or so square baking dish. Stir together butter, egg, sugar, flour and milk in a medium bowl. It should be like a cake batter or a little thicker. Pour over blackberries. Don't stir, just let the crust ooze throughout the berries, filling the nooks and crannies. Sprinkle with sugar on top.

Bake at 375° for approximately 50-60 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly. Don't overcook. Let stand 10 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

That's how you hunt for Blackberries!

My daughter graduates from High School on Sat. The frenzy of activities, ie. her prom, his prom, dates, dinner, last day "walk out", dresses, shopping, shoes, hair, makeup, nails, more shoes, another dress, another white dress, another formal, more parties, more gifts, more, more, more.....

okay, so you get the pic.....I know there will never be another milestone like this one...well, not until college graduation and a wedding. So what's a mother to do? Open the purse strings, don't tell Daddy by pretending displeasure and chagrin at the multitude of requests and needs. But, then, just sit back and enjoy the ride, knowing "like mother, like daughter"!!!!!

Southern Style Kentucky and it's not just chicken!

The first Saturday in May is traditionally known as the best 2 minutes in sports. The Kentucky Derby and all its surrounding festivities are in the works for months, even years, beginning with the Grand Fireworks display and ending on the backside at Churchill Downs.

There are benefits, such as the Susan G. Komen wear pink awareness, seen at the KY Oaks. Galas, teas, dinners, balls and dances swarm the calendar, abuzz with exciting events and social gatherings. Concerts, parades, backside tips and paddock passes energize the crowds. Other than the thoroughbreds' neigh to it's stable neighbor, the most recognizable symbol of the Kentucky Derby Season is the finery perched atop the ladies' heads. Made of silk, satins, feathers and plumes, these artfully created masterpieces are the trophies of the season.

This year, one of the most notable personalities to don one of my custom creations is Miss Kentucky USA, 2009, Maria Montgomery. Wearing a trendy and edgy fascinator of assorted peacock plumes with a dash of pink for Breast Cancer awareness, Miss KY was the hit of the KY Oaks. A sinamay bow and birdcage veiling completed the elegant rendition of an 18th century fashion trend, and 1920s flapper look gone retro modern!

On Derby Day, Miss Kentucky USA, 2009, wore a hand beaded ivory downbrim. Pearls, sequins, satin, silk and chiffon ribbons all combined to reveal a sophisticated and elegantly classic look to compliment her gold embroidered and beaded dress.

A Day of Quiet...

Today, Good Friday, my children's Catholic school, 6th grade, will reinact the Stations of the Cross. My youngest son will be a soldier. This is a very moving event, especially as school is dismissed in quiet reverence with the thoughts of our Lord and Savior dying on the Cross for our Sins.

As you go through your Easter festivities, quietly take a moment to reflect on the purpose of this Season and the magnitude of these events.

A Day in the Life.....

My Daughter, Lauren, is in the midst of Senior Year excitement. Along with the Sr. ring, college applications and road trips comes the Senior pictures. Somewhere between 1981 and 2008, Senior pictures became a glamorous, "Vogue-ish" Event. Clothing changes, Urban vs. Retro vs. Mod vs. Contemporary vs. whateveraphotographercanimagineandchargefor is the theme! I was the "stand by" Mom, holding the mirror, touching up the lipstick, fastening the zippers, straightening, shifting, fixing, etc.

What does a Woodland Fairy look like?

That was the million dollar question.....I had bid and successfully aquired a custom order for a Woodland Fairy Costume, for an adult. So I headed to HobbyLobby, where of course, tulle was on sale.....the week before!

I formed the design in my mind's eye, selecting materials to make it come true. Gathering supplies like a worker bee on a mission for the most golden and sweetest nectar, I headed to the line of customers for the cutting of the cloth. As I stood there, debating my color scheme, figuring yardage and salivating at the thought of this custom creation, a voice interrupted my mental stream. Now, mind you, I'm easily distracted, easily stimulated and very forgetful! Who knows where those ideas would go now that a voice had lured my mental state to another realm.....or if I would ever return to those creative moments.

"What are you making?" the voice asked. (An eager artisan's favorite question had been laid at my feet like a sacrifice, and here I am complaining about it!) I turned to see an adorable 30something lady, chic, trendy and smiling pleasantly. Hmmm, how could I ignore such a welcoming request, especially when there were now 4 more people behind us in line. Glancing over her shoulder I saw their curiosity and amusement. They were all secretly wondering and waiting for the answer. Even the grumpy little seamstress who hmphs at the thought of these younger whippersnappers and their new fangled ideas, changing the sewing rules, not following the patterns, trying to do it their way, had a gleam of interest glistening in her eye.

I stood a little taller, licked my lips and smiled as I replied in a joyful, enthusiastic voice. "A woodland fairy costume," escaped like a melody. The eyes of the crowd looked perplexed, puzzled and dazed. A smirk arrived on a few faces. The lady cutting fabric asked, "Do you have a pattern and how much of this do you need?" "No pattern and I'll take 3 yards of each, please," was my reply. I smiled and turned to the pleasant voice, whose interest was piqued. She said, "a woodland fairy.....what does a woodland fairy look like?"

Never exactly expecting that response or question, I just stood there and smiled, with my mouth gaping open, not knowing quite how to answer. After a pregnant pause, I smiled and politely said, "it's here" and pointed to my head. "My imagination says it will be earthy, natural, flowing and sensual." She nodded as if she understood, then asked, "what else do you make?" (stay tuned for part II)

Do they REALLY Grow up?

I remember the homecoming...the finches had learned to fly, sweet lily of the valley permeated the spring air, the fragility of the moment caught forever in my feeble memory. Misshapen and swollen, flattened and bruised, this olive-toned fledgling quietly sighed and stretched in an uncoordinated motion, searching for the warm and buoyant support she had grown accustomed to. Looking for all the world like a close relation to kermit the frog in all her jaundiced glory, my Lauren came home. That had to be only yesterday; so vivid with clarity in my mind's eye. Adorned by the smallest little bow which became the tiara she would still wear 17 years later as my time stood still, but her's flew on the wings of an eagle, fast forwarding her into the throes of soon to be adulthood. Just yesterday she would declare in a 3 y/o voice, "Wady wicked me," (Lady licked me)....or spin around the room singing about that bumble bee she would bring home to mommy...eating pixie sticks she discovered with the help of a great grandfather who adored her every breath...being held for entire 3 hour naps by a grandmother who eventually forgot her name, but never forgot her love...writing her name in the red clay sand on the shore of Nova Scotia with her "unky"...the first heartbreak and growing pains of becoming a teen...why can't time stand still?

Today, I took my daughter to Indiana University for a Journalism Camp. While she is there, learning how to be the editor in chief of her high school's newspaper, she will take in all the sights sounds and sensations of college life. After hauling her loot to the room she will live in for a week, she quickly paired up with her best friend, amid giggles of patrolling for cute guys and how they were going to break, or make the rules work for them. A quick hug and love you sent them on their way to a parent free break on a college campus. Even though this wasn't the first camp or college visit, this one hit me like the anvil and Wiley coyote....In a year, we would really be doing this, not just for camp, or 5 days, but...for real. I could hardly walk... alone.... to the car, tears welling in my eyes, emotion spewing from my heart. Is it really time to push her from the nest? I have just one more year to hold her close, while she struggles away, reaching for the stars of independence and the unknown. Is this really it? Did I do the best job that I could to provide her with the ability to make good decisions and choices? Did I cherish every moment possible? Does she feel the love we gave her over the past 17 years? Thinking back, there were times when I thought I would never make it as a mother. The no sleep, terrible 2s, potty training, awkward adolescence, periods, zits, boys, etc, etc, etc. Now, here I am, wishing it wouldn't go so fast. Wishing I could rock her to sleep one more time, read "goodnight moon" again and again, watch our favorite movie, sing our favorite song, just one more time. Is a mother ever ready for her little birds to fly? This one isn't....hold them close and spoil them rotten, cause one day, they will learn to fly.

All you need to do is find one of those frogs in five different participating shops, submit your answers to BAMDesigns and you’ll be entered to win one of several FAMtastic prizes! In addition to the FAM Spring Fling Scavenger Hunt, all purchases made through the participating FAM Shops on Etsy (please scroll down for shop links) will automatically be entered in the drawing.
HOW TO PLAY:
Each participating store has hidden the image of our FAM Frog or the text “famfrogs” in one or more of their listings or listing photos. Find the frog image or text in 5 participating shops and be entered for a chance to win! All purchases made from participating shops during the promotion will also be entered into the drawing.
Drawing will be held on March 26, 2008. The winners will be notified by convo or email. All entrants agree to have their names announced in the Etsy forums and on blogs.
PRIZES:
The prizes being awarded are FAM Bucks which are coupons used in participating FAM stores on Etsy. FAM Bucks are codes that entitle the bearer to receive discounts in participating FAM stores. FAM Bucks allow the winner to choose their prize from participating FAM stores!

This is what started it all for me and selling my wares. These baskets are primed, painted with your choice of Whimsical bunny scenes, personalized with a name or names, then sealed and shipped. Lots of detail goes into each basket...everytime you look at it, you will notice something new; a dragonfly, bumble bee, ducks hiding in the grass, ladybugs crawling up the handle, frogs sitting on a log or leaping over an egg, an Easter Bunny tea party or Easter Bunny rock star...I've made these for all ages and interests, from a Nascar race track Bunny to a baby bunny playing in the bathtub, these can be customized with your choice of interests.
